Dummy won the first trick with the queen of spades and led a trumpto South\'s jack. A spade was led to dummy\'s king and another trumpled and won with South\'s queen. The declarer believed that Eastheld the two missing trumps. He led a spade to dummy, ruffed thelast spade, cashed the king and ace of diamonds, ruffed a diamond,cashed the ace and king of clubs, and, finally, ruffed anotherdiamond. That was twelve tricks.

If East won his trump ace on the second trump lead, the declarerwould no longer require the trump coup play. Suppose East led adiamond at Trick 5. The declarer should play the ace and king ofdiamonds, cash the ace of spades, and ruff a diamond to eliminateany diamond from the East hand. At this point, sinceEast had no diamond left, he seemed to be squeezed in the spade anddiamond suits. But he could escape by playing a trump on thediamond lead. South would overruff and play another trump winner toarrive at this ending:
