6 ———Opening lead —king of hearts.
It is not easy tomake six clubs, even if you see all four hands. But the fact isthat the slam can be made against any defense, and anyone willingto attempt the feat is welcome to the job.
The deal wascomposed back in the 50\'s by a player named Chien-Hwa Wang, ofPeking. He was attempting to illustrate what he described as aclash squeeze, but by any name at all his solution is indeed athing of beauty.
South cashes theA-K of trumps and then the ace of diamonds, West producing the ten. Now, abandoning his plan to ruff a diamond in dummy, which wouldprove fatal in the actual hand,
South plays two more rounds of trumps toproduce this position:
North A 7 4 3 10 JWestEast J 10 82 9 6 A J Q 9 8 7South K Q 5 K 4 7South plays hislast trump and West, who cannot spare a spade or a diamond,discards the ace
of hearts as dummy contributes a spade andEast a diamond.
East then fallsvictim to a squeeze when declarer cashes the K-Q-A of spades inthat order. Whatever East discards on the last spade, South is sureto win the rest of the tricks.
